Vertical movement of ocean waters

May 28, 2018 - 1:08 PM - by Fermer05
The waters of lakes, seas and oceans of the northern hemisphere rotate counterclockwise, while the waters of the southern hemisphere rotate clockwise, forming giant whirlpools. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_gyre

As you know, everything that rotates, including whirlpools, has the property of a gyro (yule) to maintain the vertical position of the axis in space, regardless of the rotation of the Earth.

If you look at the Earth from the side of the Sun, the whirlpools, rotating together with the Earth, overturn, due to which the whirlpools precess, and as a result there is a vertical movement of oceanic waters. http://goo.gl/AM5g1s

Graduate student (PhD) positions available in trace metal biogeochemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences

Research projects:

1) Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGA)
The Northern Gulf of Alaska is a subpolar biome characterized by enhanced productivity and high environmental variability. This project is part of the new NGA LTER site and focuses on understanding the processes that control macro- and micro-nutrient dynamics and their role on the pronounced spring bloom and the regions of sustained summer primary production. Observations will take place during 3 yearly cruises from spring to fall.

The student will be responsible for collecting and processing... [Read More]
