    ***This thread is under modification***

    Here are some links to Ocean/Atmosphere datas

    __________________________________________________ ________________________

    1. IRI/LDEO Climate Data Library : data link

    " The IRI/LDEO Climate Data Library contains over 300 datasets from a variety of earth science disciplines and climate-related topics. It is a powerful tool that offers the following capabilities at no cost to the user:"

    a). access any number of datasets;
    b). create analyses of data ranging from simple averaging to more advanced EOF analyses;
    c). monitor present climate conditions with maps and analyses in the Maproom;
    d). create visual representations of data, including animations;
    e) download data in a variety of commonly-used formats(ASCII,netcdf,etc ....), including GIS-compatible formats.
    __________________________________________________ ________________________

    2. ECMWF Data server : data link

    "You will find on this web server data from various projects hosted by ECMWF ( European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) " and the datas are available in GRIB or NetCDF formats at surface and different pressure levels, like

    a). data from the DEMETER project : several coupled models have been run to produce the hindcasts

    b). data from the ECMWF 15 Years Re-Analysis : usually calls it as ERA15 data The ERA-15 production system generated re-analyses from December 1978 to February 1994. The following observations were used:

    I. FGGE Level II-B data for 1978/79;
    II. COADS ship and buoy observations;
    III. ALPEX Level II-B data;
    IV. ECMWF archive of observations received via the WMO GTS;
    V. additional TEMP and AIREP data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA);
    VI. Australian PAOB surface pressure pseudo-observations from Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Melbourne;
    VII. TOGA COARE data;
    VIII. TOVS Cloud Cleared Radiance data;
    IX. Hadley Centre GISST and NCEP SST analyses.

    c). data from the ECMWF 40 Years Re-Analysis : usually calls it as ERA40 data, The new reanalysis project ERA-40 will cover the period from mid-1957 to 2001 including the earlier ECMWF reanalysis ERA-15, 1979-1993, The three dimensional variational technique will be applied using the T159L60 version of the Integrated Forecasting System to produce the analyses every six hours. Analysis involves comprehensive use of satellite data, starting from the early Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer data in 1972, then later including TOVS, SSM/I, ERS and ATOVS data. Cloud Motion Winds will be used from 1979 onwards.

    d). ENACT data (in development) :

    e) Atlantic THORPEX Regional Campaign (A-TreC) dataset : The Atlantic THORPEX Regional Campaign (A-TreC) data sets have been created according to the A-TreC SOP Observation Matrix - Version 3 updated 23rd of March 2004. The SOP took place from 17/10/2003 to 15/12/2003. During the Special Observing Period (SOP) in addition to the standard WMO observing system the additional drop sondes, land based radio sondes, high frequency AMDAR reports, radiosondes from ASAP ships and rapid-scan winds from geostationary satellites were available. The data are organized by calendar date in 24 hour slots.

    8. Simple Ocean Data Assimilation Project (SODA). data link
    Contributed by vinu

    SODA_1.2 is UMD reanalysis product using an eddy-permitting global model based initially on POP_1.3 numerics and SODA procedure. The details please see here.

    The horizontal resolution of POP on the equator is 28km x 44km reducing to an approximately uniform 25km x 25 km in the weatern North Atlantic. Vertically, it contains 40 levels, from ocean surface to about 5500m. The OI analysis was done with our SODA procedure every 10 day on 1 by 1 degree resulotion. The observation data of sst, temperature and salinity were used in the analysis. Altimetry data were not used in this product.

    The datasets we provided are on a 0.5 x 0.5 degree horizontal resolution with 23 levels, from 5m to 1139m. The variables in the datasets are: temperature, salinity, zonal & meridional velocities, windstresses, sea surface height, heat & fresh water fluxes. The time coverage is monthly, from 1958 to 2001.

    Updated Ocean Database Available Online
    Polar Science Center Hydrographic Climatology (PHC)

    PHC 3.0 is available online : here

    ----------------------------------------------
    The Polar Science Center Hydrographic Climatology (PHC) has been recently updated. PHC 3.0 is a smoothed, gridded 3-dimensional global ocean database of annual, seasonal (winter and summer), and monthly climatological mean temperature and salinity. It is the first GLOBAL gridded database with a high-quality description of the arctic seas, achieved by merging data from several sources, including Russian and Canadian.

    The update fixed two sources of small anomalies:

    (1) Anomalies created by the background field used for optimal interpolation in PHC 2.1 were eliminated. In the arctic, these errors sometimes led to overly warm surface water (order 0.1 deg C or less above the freezing point) which could affect ocean-ice heat fluxes.

    (2) Other anomalies caused by differences in our input data sets near the Arctic Ocean bottom were also eliminated. These errors sometimes created isolated regions of static instability which, in a numerical model, can lead to dynamic topography anomalies which generate stationary eddies.

    PHC 3.0 is available online : here

    Funding for the development of PHC has been generously provided by the Office of Naval Research, High Latitude Program, by NASA's Earth Observing System, and by the National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs.

    Thumbs up

    U can search the APDRC data link provided above. In that u go to Quickscat datasets there u will have the climatology winds of all the oceans. Otherwise, go to NCEP data link where u can find the long term mean nc files of winds.
    All the best.

    'Online shopping' for data at the BODC

    In line with our goal to provide direct access and online delivery to all our data holdings, the British Oceanographic Data Centre announces a major enhancement to our data request service.

    The new release of the 'All data series' facility now provides for the on-line delivery of data (~ 60,000 series) held within the UK's National Oceanographic Database (NODB). This encompasses physical, geophysical, chemical and biological measurements.
