    Annual Report-2005

    Dear members,

It is our pleasure to notice that our website is gathering
remarkable attention from Universities and Research institutes
under oceanographic discipline all over the world. Within this
short period of time and with the efforts of all its members,
this website has grown up healthy and provides a right venue
for any kind of Oceanographic discussions. This website completes
its first year of successful launch by December-2005 and hope it will
    continue operate in the future.

In this occasion, we are planning to prepare an annual report for the
website (Annual Report-2005). This report will cover the status of the
website, members statistics, finance, agenda, message from a
distinguished scientist and proposals for improving the activities and will
be released on early January-2006. We hope to circulate
    hard copies of this report
on selected institutes where our members are
    mostly located.

Although a committee of moderators will be in charge of producing the
report, we welcome the comments/suggestion/request and
    proposals
from members those who are interested to extend their
contributions to the Annual Report. The members can post their
comments here and that will be considered in the Annual report. The
members are directed to contribute their views on any of the following ...

    a) comments about the website (positive and negative).
    b) proposals for improving the activities of the website.
    c) suggestions to add new items in the website.
    d) suggestion to modify/remove any existing items.
    e) remarks.
    f) others.

This thread will be open until Dec-15-2005 and the replies within
the deadline will be considered in the Annual report.

PS: The request for write-ups from the moderators will be sent by
    email separately.

    -Thanking you for your replies.

    suggestion:

they could comment not only on activities on website
but also what an oceanographic community like us
could do, besides that on the website.

may be we can also invite interesting articles from
members which could be fitting to an annual report???
for eg: role of oceanography/oceanographers in present/future
    world.
depending up on the suitability, we can publish it on the
annual report or take a few notes (excerpts) from it.

    Suggestion turned out from arjunsmenon
and rajesh is quoted below (its bit old, though it may give you an
example 'What is this post meant for').

    Hi all
we are only including the resent happenings in oceanography in our site. That is not much importance is giving to the history or the basics of this field. why cant we include more threads and posts (like the one which gave us all a good introduction about modelling) in our site, so that our site can be made a good reference site for all, even those who are biginners in this field.

    Hello Administrators,
Why do we need to Log in to this site? It seems that even before we log in to the site, all the things are open to all. Only difference is of two text boxes. I suppose it would be better to have a log in screen first. Only after giving the password , multiple links should be accessible.

    Improving Front page.

I have some suggestions to Improve the Front page of our Site.

I used to post lots of research opportunities as a bulk posting (like 10 posts in one day) which eventually supresses other posts (eg: requests/help or general talk) coming on front page. So can we make one more place for requests, help, etc ..??

There has some vaccant spaces at the bottom of the Front page.

I feels most of the users are looking at front page of our site. So once these types of requests are suppressed, they may not be answered/noticed ever.

    best of luck

    suggestions

    Dear administrator,
    I have some suggestions.

First we can have a 'new' tab to all the categories (like oppertunities, Research...) so that one who expect some reply in a category can see whether there is some new postings and go for the new postings despite the new posts toppling the relatively old new posts down.

Second, include some more tools (like subscript, superscript) necessary for equation editing in the edit box.

Third, allow some pool for freely available literature categorywise with search facility. it should be allowed for the members to upload papers when they get one. i dont know about the additional space or so wanted in this matter.

more to come later. reviewing the suggetions by the administrator is a feedback.
    Thanks

    Rajesh,

For your first point:The point you raised is good. but i think we shouldnt keep one coz who ever who is logging in to this site should not be looking on a perticular posts reply, but for a wide range of posts. Even if he want to know about a perticular post's reply(that he posted) he can give notification to his mail as that post is replied.

Second point: This is well supported by me also, but roxy should answer how much difficult is that.

Third Point: The point you made is not practical now, because we dont have that much web space with us now. and also as we upload papers and all and started giving it freely our band width will also get affected...so its a good suggetion for the future.

Thank you for suggesting such perticuler things that you noticed in our site. expecting more.

Please i request all others also to get on with the things and suggest more and more innovative ideas.

    Thank you

1st & 3rd suggestions i will try to reply later, anand has replied for the time
being. praveen also has mentioned similar suggestions.

about the 3rd suggestion, rajesh, it is already there in 'how to use website'
    thread. check this post: http://www.oceanographers.net/forums...97&postcount=4

we can add more of these mathematical symbols if needed.
for the time being there are symbols like δ, ∑, subscript, superscript etc.

I saw this e-mail notification option in other forums. Can't we include this in our Forum too??. Its a nice option for those who need a reply for his/her post.

One more option is, short e-mail notification to members about the recent posts in our forum (Titles and author of posts is enough). This can be done on a weekly intervals (weekly digest).

I saw these options in ROMS discussion site: http://marine.rutgers.edu/po/users/forum/index.php

This too is available in our forum and mentioned in 'how to use website'
    http://www.oceanographers.net/forums...45&postcount=3

"4. Subscribing to a forum (thread). If you are in a forum(thread), you have a
button 'Forum tools' (Thread tools). Click on it, you will get option to
update you daily/weekly by email about that forum (thread)."

We can automatically make everyone subscribed but it is not good as there
would be several members who need not want such updates. Also, we don't
want to end up in the spam-blaclist.
So we've set it as a per-user option. Anyone can subscribe to any thread/forum.

Praveen, your 2nd suggestion is possible by subscribing itself.
Still we should rethink about it. As you said, a forced weekly or biweekly
    notification may be good?
