    SST data

    Hello,
Can anybody suggest which Sea Surface Temperature data is reliable? where can i find it?
    Thanks,
    Rajesh

TMI provides reliable satellite data for the tropical ocean.
    The resolution is 0.25 x 0.25 lat & lon.
The link is already given in our Ocean Database http://www.oceanographers.net/forums...hread.php?t=88
    (check no.7, SSMI)

You can go directly for the TMI SST at http://www.ssmi.com/tmi/tmi_browse.html
and ftp the data in bytemap format. Later you've to convert
it to netcdf using the fortran/matlab code they provide with
    the data.

Here are two validation reports on TMI SST:

    1. Validation of SST and Windspeed from TRMM using North Indian Ocean Moored Buoy Observations
Senan, Retish and Anitha, DS and Sengupta, Debasis (2001) Validation of SST
and Windspeed from TRMM using North Indian Ocean Moored Buoy Observations.
    Technical Report 2001 AS1

    2. Sea Surface Temperature of the Bay of Bengal Derived from the TRMM Microwave Imager
Bhat, GS and Vecchi, GA and Gadgil, S (2004) Sea Surface Temperature of
the Bay of Bengal Derived from the TRMM Microwave Imager. Journal of Atmospheric
    and Oceanic Technology 21(8) p. 1283-1290.

    Rajesh,
There are numerous satellite derived SSTs and also model analyzed SST fields are available for different purpose of study. Each SSTs product having their advantages as well own disadvantages. As Rocksea suggested to use TMI data from public domain, I suggest you to use it cautiously because TMI global SST product has some inherent problem in coastal area and high wind regimes. The global accuracy of TMI SST is 0.5C but you can not expect it in regional and seasonal basis particularly over the north Indian Ocean in different season. However, it can provide SSTs under cloudy areas. Before using the TMI SST, you refer the papers given by Rocksea. Apart from the TMI product, you can use pathfinder (PF) AVHRR (Kilpatrick et al. 2001) SST whose accuracy is nearly to 0.3C in global scale having spatial resolution of 4km (Though Level-1b AVHRR data has 1.1 km resolution, but SST product available as 4km resolution in public domain. The dataset is available in PODAAC site with varied format). This product has also regional and seasonal biases. However, Reynolds et al. have used this product in addition with insitu SST measurement to generate a blended product as Reynolds Optimum Interpolated (OI) SST (Spatial scale: 1x1, temporal scale: weekly and monthly). It is also known as NCEP OI SST. Reynolds OI SST takes care of sensor errors as well skin-bulk temperature differences and spatial-temporal sampling differences in different source of data. As per my insight, this is most reliable SST product to perform the long-term analysis. At present, microwave OI SST (spatial resolution: 25kmx25km) is also being generated at Remote Sensing Systems (RSS), which takes care of sensor error of TMI and AMSR. The validation result of this product is given somewhere in RSS site. Let me know about your interest of study to use the SST data so that I can suggest you subsequently.
