The collection of data from one of the most secret parts of the world is a by-product of the search. Extinct volcanoes and undersea depressions nearly a mile deep have been discovered as scientists search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. Researchers looking for the Boeing 777 are creating 3-D maps of unexplored areas of the southern Indian Ocean in advance of submersible vehicles which will comb the area next month. The area has been deemed the most likely place to find the plane, after a series of brief electronic communications between MH370 and a satellite, the BBC reports.

"While it is impossible to determine with certainty where the aircraft may have entered the water, all the available data and analysis indicates a highly probable search area close to a long but narrow arc of the southern Indian Ocean," reported the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is leading the search.
