The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is a premier Institute of National and International repute, devoted to research in various aspects of Atmospheric Sciences, with emphasis on Tropical Meteorology, particularly the Indian monsoons. IITM is an autonomous institute wholly supported by the Department of Science Technology (DST), Government of India, with its major streams of research including Climatology and Hydrometeorology, Forecasting Research, Physical Meteorology and Aerology, Climate and Global Modelling, Theoretical Studies, Boundary Layer and Land-surface Processes Studies and Instruments and Observational Techniques. Research activities are supported by excellent library, computer, internet and other infrastructural facilities. One of the most important activities of IITM is to train young postgraduates/doctorates and motivate them into taking up research careers in atmospheric sciences, which offer some of the most challenging scientific problems that face the human society today.

Applications are invited on plain paper from young, bright and motivated persons for awarding research fellowships

Research Fellow (two posts)

Stipend: Rs. 8000/- per month (fixed) plus admissible house rent allowance;

Tenure: Four years, renewable up to a maximum additional period of one year.

Essential Qualifications:

A good Master's degree in Meteorology, Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics or Geophysics and qualified in the CSIR/UGC National Eligbility Test or GATE or Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences. B.E./B.Tech/MCA/ MCM.

Desirable Qualifications:

POST - 1

Research experience in climate-related areas, especially in working with numerical models, will be an added qualification. The position involves scientific programming on the latest computer system and the candidate is expected to demonstrate good aptitude to work on both UNIX and Windows platforms.

POST – 2

(Under the DOD/INDOMOD entitled “Air-sea Interactions in the Indian Ocean Region” project.)

Experience in software development, web-designing, knowledge of programming languages such as (C, Fortran, C++, F90 etc.), Windows, Unix / Linux. Familiar in handling atmospheric and oceanic-datasets; related graphical packages and data archival – will be an added advantage.

Upper Age Limit : 28 years as on January 1, 2005.

Selection of the suitable candidates for the fellowships will be based on a personal interview at the IITM campus in Pune. Candidates called for the interview will be paid sleeper class train fare to and fro by the shortest route on production of original tickets.
