Applications are invited from eligible candidates for consideration of offering 3 fellowships, each of three years duration under the Nansen Fellowship programme of the Nansen Scientific Society, Bergen, Norway for the purpose of pursuing doctoral research leading to Ph.D degree of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). The Nansen Fellowship program jointly offered by Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre, Norway (NERSC), Nansen Environmental Research Center India (NERCI), and CUSAT, is available for the academic year 2011-2012. The candidates must have passed M. Sc Marine Biology / Oceanography / Meteorology or M. Tech in Atmospheric Sciences with at least first class (60%) or equivalent grade and be eligible for registering for Ph.D degree of CUSAT. Post graduate students appearing for their final exams this year can also apply (mark lists upto the 3rd semester of M. Sc/ M.Tech have to be provided along with the application).
The fields of research that would be supported under the programme are
- Indian monsoon variability
- Sea level change in the Indian ocean
- Monitoring and modelling of harmful algal blooms
The upper age limit of the candidates shall be 28 years as on 1st January 2012. Applicants have to mention their field of preference from the above list in their application. A self attested photograph (passport size) shall also be affixed in the application.
Applications shall be submitted by post or in person in plain paper showing all details enclosing true copies of certificates, credentials, testimonials etc. on or before 15th June 2011 to the Director, School of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science & Technology, Fine Arts Avenue, Cochin – 682 016.

The terms of the work plan and fellowship shall be as follows:
The work plan for each candidate will typically be three months per year at the Nansen Center in Bergen, Norway and the remaining period of the year at CUSAT / NERCI in Cochin.
For the annual research periods in India, the fellowships will be INR 16,000/- per month for junior research fellow (1st and 2nd year) and INR 18,000/- per month for senior research fellow (3rd year), plus 15% for covering accommodation etc. Each student will in addition have available an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000 for additional costs (domestic travel, data etc.) occurring while in India. Payments of the grants will be made through NERCI, India.
For the annual 3 months stay of the candidates in Norway, the Nansen Scientific Society will cover return economy air tickets, medical and travel insurance (to be issued from India before departure) and visa expenses according to actual costs. A mobility allowance following the rates of the Research Council of Norway, currently at Norwegian kroner 12,500 NOK – twelve thousand five hundred – per month, will be provided while in Norway. The candidates will be provided with accommodation at student hostel at the cost of about NOK 2,500 per month to be covered from their fellowships.
