AMET University (Under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956)
DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
NATIONAL LEVEL WORKSHOP ON MARINE MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY
AMET University (Under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956) is a pioneer in Maritime Education in India. The Department of Biotechnology is seriously indulging itself in innovative and prosperous research in the field of Marine Biotechnology which is a undiscovered area in research studies. There is a huge prosperity which is hidden deep under the ocean, so we are on a progress towards unveiling this treasure. As a part of our research extension programs, we are conducting series of workshops for introducing Marine Biotechnology, which is a prosperous field in science. We have sound experience in training and inspiring students to work on Marine Sciences. We at the Department of Biotechnology, AMET University (Under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956) have already conducted a National Level Workshop on Marine Biotechnology in February 2010 for UG students. We were overwhelmed with joy that there was a huge response for that event. More than 120 applicants aspired to participate in the workshop, but we are unfortunate to reject more than 95 applicants as we have planned to accommodate only 25 students. In line with this success, we are now organizing a NATIONAL LEVEL WORKSHOP ON MARINE MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY during 23-27, August 2010. The workshop mainly aims to train students and research scholars from non-Microbiology disciplines such as Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics who are interested to do Microbiology works. The workshop would be a real HANDS ON experience with individualized care.
TECHNICAL DETAILS OF THE WORKSHOP The workshop will give hands on training in the following technical aspects.
Isolation of Marine Organisms (Bacteria-Luminescent Bacteria, fluorescent bacteria, Fungi and Marine Actinomycetes) from environmental samples
Identification of microorganisms (Bacteria, Fungi and Actinomycetes): Basic numerical taxonomy
Maintenance and Safe Handling of Microorganisms
Short term and Long term preservation of Microorganisms
Characterization of Microorganisms for various Bioactivities such as Antibiosis, plant growth promotion, production of enzymes, pigments and Enzyme assays
Molecular Biology: Isolation and quantification of macromolecules: DNA, Proteins- Intracellular, membrane bound and extra cellular. Electrophoresis.
Note: All the organisms used in the workshop would be Marine Microorganisms. But the techniques are applicable to all kinds of Microorganisms.
