We are looking for a candidate to work in a temporary position of Assistant Scientist in a collaborative project on downscaling of APCC seasonal climate forecasts to local regions in East Asia. The ideal candidate will be a recent post-doc. in a relevant discipline such as Meteorology, statistics, Oceanography, etc., though doctoral or graduate students with high caliber would be considered. The job would include:

(i) Necessary training for 2-3 weeks on downscaling techniques of APCC monthly 3-month forecasts for local levels.

(ii)He/she will work on improving the available deterministic downscaling technology, develop probabilistic downscaling technology, and once ready, utilize the technology to downscale the monthly forecasts for required stations in Japan, and upload the digital data to the collaborating international partner's server.

(iii) Assist in development of relevant documentation/paper work etc.

(iv) any other duties assigned by the Managers.

The candidate is expected to start working as early as possible, preferably from April 1, 2009.

The maximum salary, applicable from the second month of service at APCC, would be around 2,500,000 KW subject to qualifications and experience. During the training period (first month), a stipend up to KW 800,000 will be provided.Candidates with experience may be exempted from the training.

The initial offer will be up to 31 March, 2010, and is extendable on annual basis every April for next 2-3 years subject to renewal of the project, and based on the performance of the individual.
