Hi
Can anyone tell me How to do EOF analysis for the rainfall.
I am using brightness temperatures of different TMI channels of TRMM satellite for the rainfall retrieval.
Please tell me about any freely available software for this and from where I can get the documentation regarding this.
Thanks

Hi Rajesh
I am not concerned with the EOF analysis of TRMM rainfall data.
I will here try to explain briefly, some possible steps that you can
follow to achieve an EOF analysis.
(1) The basics of EOF analysis is explained in detail in the book,
Preisendorfer, R. W., and C D. Mobley. 1988: Principal component
analysis in meteorology and oceanography. Elsevier.
and
Wilks, D. S. 1995: Statistical Methods in the Atmospheric Sciences,
Academic Press
(2) It is always better to understand the operations behind it,
before depending on any ready-made softwere.
(3) Here you can find a useful manual for EOF analysis.
(manual.pdf) 53 pages, with examples.
http://www.dcess.ku.dk/~silvia/eofsvd/eofsvd.html
http://erizo.ucdavis.edu/~dmk/notes/EOFs/EOFs.html (also see this)
(4) If you understand (from reading above manual) how to do
EOF, you can use "Matlab" to set a simple program yourself
to find the eigen-value matrix and Principle Components.
(5) There are some software which perform EOF
analysis from the grided data. Ferret has built-in reoutine for
EOF analysis.

Roxy already has given some links for EOF analysis, check that too,

Thanks Vinu and praveen for the important information. I am studying these and I will let you know if I get any problem.
