International Conference on
Recent Advances in Marine Antifouling Technology
(RAMAT- 2006)
6 - 8 November 2006, Chennai (Madras), INDIA

Marine biofouling problems of industrial cooling systems, shipping industry and oceanographic instruments have assumed considerable importance in recent years. Biofouling and its control require careful evaluation both from the operational and environmental point of view. Estimates of fouling damage in tropical waters like in India seem to be stupendous.

National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai and International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Society U.K. have come together to organize an international conference RAMAT 2006 to focus on Marine Antifouling Technology.

RAMAT is focussed at understanding the problems encountered in the protection of marine structures, ship hulls, seawater intakes and offshore structures against marine biofouling and corrosion.

The recent legislature of the International Maritime Organization imposing a ban on the use of tin based antifouling paints has led to the necessity of evolving environmental friendly antifouling formulations of easily biodegradable materials. Further the conference would bring out a comparison of alternate antifouling formulation / techniques available.

A further recent development in techniques for evaluating industrial biofilms and biofouling is also an aspect to be dealt with.

The subject of the conference is multidisciplinary involving Microbiologists, Marine Biologists, Metallurgists, Biotechnologists, Polymer Chemists, Paint Engineers, Power Plant Engineers and Corrosion Engineers.

The conference would deal with the latest advancement in biocides and paint coating technology to combat the problems and would serve as a platform for the industry-academic interaction. The new application of surface modification to curb biofouling is also to be discussed in this meeting.
