Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is developing ocean bottom sensors that will help warn tsunami strikes in advance. “We are developing the ocean bottom sensors for detecting variations in the pressures. This is the spin-off of our space technology. We are closely working with ocean development department on this,” G Madhavan Nair, chairman, Isro said.

To put the tsunami-warning systems in place, the department has agreed that certain work will be shared between them and the Bangalore-headquartered Isro, he said. “So, we are going to provide satellite connectivity between the voice and platforms that they (ocean development department) are putting in place, and also between seismic stations and control centres”, Mr Nair said.

He also said Isro is working with the ministry of home affairs to establish a disaster management support system which will address issues on preparedness and evacuation in the times of natural calamities like cyclones, floods and land-slides. “All the space-based resources will be made available to this project (disaster management support system)”, the Isro chairman said.

It’s possible to identify areas susceptible to natural disasters and safe places where people can be evacuated with a plan drawn-up using remote-sensing pictures, he said. “When computer connectivity is available between various state capitals and control centres and national remote sensing agency ...When an event (natural disaster) takes place, satellite imageries can be made available to users in time so that they can plan evacuation and so on”, Mr Nair said.
