hi!
oceanography or anything LIKE it is really not my field, but somehow they interest me.
Recently, i heard that thailand's chief meteorologist was fired, he was blamed for that tsunami's.
Any comment about this?

hi tiger_lilyanne,
It is said that several centers and officials (in and out of India and other asian countries)
were informed about the tsunami after the earthquake. The fact that the common
people were not warned, may be attributed to inactiveness due to unawareness, I feel.
Since none of these people/officials were that familiar with a tsunami (though in India it
happened in 1945) everyone was taken by surprise.
It is said that the Internationational Ocean Monitors predicted a tsunami would
likely follow the earthquake but they didn't know whom to inform. They had put a bulletin
in 20 minutes and emailed some officials but that didn't help. I don't know complete
information about the sequence of alerts and actions taken but I would say none realised
the seriousness in time.

p.s. some officials in India were shifted due to inactiveness 'after' the tsunami.
