position in operational ocean analysis at ECMWF (UK)

ECMWF has active Monthly and Seasonal Forecasting Programmes and
seeks a scientist to join the project team. A coupled atmosphere ocean model
and ocean data assimilation system have been developed and are used to
make real-time monthly and seasonal forecasts.

The new appointee will work on the ocean model and analysis system,
including both technical and scientific aspects with an emphasis on
improving initial conditions for coupled forecasts.

The work will include:

* Implementing, evaluating and further developing new advanced
variational assimilation methods;

* Maintaining the operational ocean model and analysis system;

* Evaluating and diagnosing ocean model performance.

The Section collaborates with other research institutes on data
assimilation issues.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a university degree in a relevant discipline and
two years experience in scientific research on modelling or data
assimilation for ocean or atmosphere. Experience with Fortran and Unix
are required.

Fluency in one of the working languages of ECMWF (English, French and
German) and a good knowledge of at least one of the other languages are
also required.
Staff are normally recruited from among the nationals of the Member
States or the Co-operating States*.

Remuneration:

A2: £3,326.00 to £4,443.00; A3; £4,104.00 to £5,550.00 basic salary per
month net of tax.8.8% will be deducted from the basic salary for the
Pension Scheme and 0.2% for Partial Invalidity. A further 1.25% of
basic
salary and related allowances will be deducted for the ECMWF
Supplementary Health Insurance Scheme.
Where applicable: household allowance of 6% of basic salary; children’s
allowance of £187.90 per child per month; expatriation allowance of 14%
or 18% of basic salary for expatriates; education allowance for
children
of expatriates will be added.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Length of contract: Maximum of 4 years for initial contract, with the
possibility of renewal.
