Workshop on Science – policy interactions in the river basins and coastal zone management, February 27-28, 2006. Organized by National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India.
Theme
To address different aspects of river basins and coastal ecosystems management for sustainable development. Various drivers and their pressures pertaining to these ecosystems and their impacts need to be addressed.
Broadly the following topics will be covered:
• Ore production and mining rejects, sediment load, heavy metals
• Fish catch and its variability, impact of anoxia, overfishing, clam and oyster fisheries , aquaculture
• Dam construction, fresh water discharge to estuaries, irrigation and its benefits.
• Decline in agriculture, impact of fertilizers and pesticides
• Sewage, industrial effluents, oil spills.
• Impact of tourism on environment, water quality, aesthetics.
• Ground water and fresh water monitoring
• Coastal structures, Harbour activities
• Climate and rainfall
• River traffic, coastal zone vigilance
• Biodiversity, forests, wetlands, mangroves, salt marshes
