Postdoctoral Positions. The Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies
(COLA) invites applications for three (3) post-doctoral positions to demonstrate the value of NASA research satellite data, model-based data assimilation products and coupled climate models for improving seasonal predictions of the tropical climate, funded by the new NASA Modeling, Analysis and Prediction (MAP) program.
Post-doc 1: investigate atmospheric noise, which contributes to the spread of coupled climate forecasts within an ensemble, using satellite-based surface wind observations.
Post-doc 2: use high-resolution satellite-based coastal winds and surface temperatures to better characterize the ocean initial state, diagnose the impact on coupled model predictions, and develop better coupled-model initialization strategies.
Post-doc 3: evaluate coupled model simulation and prediction of the Asian monsoon and better characterize intraseasonal variability in the monsoon region using precipitation analyses based on satellite data, in situ analyses, and a regional climate model. The principal tool to be used in this study will be the NASA Goddard Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) coupled climate model. The work will be done at COLA under supervision of Drs.J. Kinter, B. Huang, B. Kirtman, V. Krishnamurthy, and V. Misra, in collaboration with scientists from GMAO, University of Delaware and George Mason University.
Applicants should have the ability, experience and willingness to work with large atmospheric and oceanic GCMs and large satellite and in situ data sets. A Ph.D. in atmospheric or oceanic sciences or closely related disciplines is required, and programming experience, especially with MPI and/or ESMF, is desirable. The positions are available 1 February 2006 and renewable for up to three years.
Excellent benefits are available. Please send an application with curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and three references to:
