National Seminar on "Sustainabillty of Seafood Production: Reflections, Alternatives and Environmental Control" during 23-24 February, 2006
at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa
Theme
The main aim of the seminar is to cover practically all aspects of sea and estuarine food production in the country. The themes and sub-themes of the seminar are as under:
A. Reflections
i. Existing stateof major fisheries(assessment of stock) - a) oil sardine, b) mackerel, c) Bombay duck, d) perches, e) prawns, f) other species of importance
ii. Problems of overfishing - a) overfished stocks, b) sustainable areas
iii. Modifications in craft and gear - a) catch efficiency, b) mesh selection bias
iv. Importance of prawn fisheries (shrimps)- a) problems of preservation (canning and ,freezing), b) exports
v. Seaweeds and their importance- a) food, b) fodder, c) manure. d) hemicals and drugs
vi Fish products and by-products- a) fish meal, b) fish manure. c) fish cake, d) shark fin, e) fish fingers
B. Alternatives
i. Aquaculture - a) constraints, b) remedial measures, c) other related problems
ii. Maricultureandestuarine-culture- a)shell and fin fish, b) shrimps, c) molluscan culture, d) oyster and pearl oysters, e) mussels
iii. Fishing rights - legal and policy issues
iv. Conclusions and recommendations

i. Categories of pollution in coastal waters - a) sewage, b) oil spill, c) industrial waste
