Job Announcement

Environmental Scientist- Drought Monitoring and Phenology.

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC),
contractor for the U.S. Geological Survey's Center for Earth Resources
Observation and Science (EROS), invites applicants to apply for a
position at EROS in Sioux Falls, SD. The successful candidate will
provide research and technical support to Drought Monitoring and
Phenology activities at EROS. This activity focuses on expanding the
role of satellite remote sensing for drought decision support; and
includes working closely with the National Drought Mitigation Center;
the development and application of algorithms to extract vegetation
phenology (e.g., timing of greenup, maturity, senescence) and anomalies
in the signal from satellite imagery (e.g., AVHRR, MODIS), and the
specific application of remote sensing technology and geospatial
information to enhance the scientific basis for risk assessment and
response related to drought.

General responsibilities include: expanding the area of coverage of EROS
drought models by developing climate, remote sensing, and other
biogeoscience datasets; conducting research regarding satellite
continuity (i.e., extending research/applications from AVHRR data to
MODIS, and eventually to VIIRS); and exploring the influence
of biological and climatological variables on drought and phenological
patterns in the U.S.

Required education/skills: Masters in climatology, geography,
atmospheric sciences, ecology, or related field (Ph.D. is desirable)
with major emphasis on climate, multispectral remote sensing,
landscape-level vegetation characteristics, and vegetation phenology.
The successful candidate must have: knowledge of remote sensing and
geographic information systems and modeling; strong background in
applied climate; minimum of two years experience working in science
research; knowledge of vegetation response to climatic and environmental
drivers; experience with satellite data analysis (especially Vegetation
Indices); strong communication and writing skills; and ability to work
independently as well as collaboratively with team members.
