Research Fellow: Mixing and Diffusion in Coherent Vortices (Ref. 4804)
This new full-time EPSRC grant-funded post is available from 1 January 2006
(or as soon as possible thereafter) on a fixed-term basis for a period of 35
months. The work involves the study of mixing within coherent vortices, and
so will combine aspects of vortex stability with issues of understanding
mixing through dynamical systems tools, using numerical codes to explore a
number of idealised systems. The Exeter team involves Andrew Gilbert (vortex
dynamics, mixing), John Thuburn (fluid dynamics, meteorology) and Peter
Ashwin (dynamical systems), together with Andrew Bassom (stability theory,
mixing) who will visit from Perth, Australia. More information about the team

Applicants should have, or be about to submit, a PhD in a related area of
Mathematics, and be keen to develop research in the areas of:
* dynamical systems methods applied to fluid mixing,
* vortex dynamics and vortex stability,
* numerical solution of fluid motion.
We also expect the successful applicant to keep abreast of advances in the
field, present seminars and papers at international conferences as the
research proceeds, and in due course to take a lead in writing up the results
in scientific papers.
Salary will be up to £22,289 pa on scale RES 1A £20,044 pa - £30,002 pa with
placement depending on experience and qualifications.
