Dynamical meteorologist and modeller
African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses UK (AMMA-UK)

3 year postdoctoral opportunity available from 1 January 2006.

An ambitious research scientist is sought, to play a central role in the
African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) programme in the UK.
AMMA is an extensive research programme addressing the environment and
climate of sub-Saharan Africa, embracing meteorology, land surface
processes, oceanography and their impacts on the human population. In the
UK, the NERC-funded AMMA-UK consortium aims in particular to address the
science of land-atmosphere interaction.

This post will be central to the AMMA-UK effort, involving the development
of numerical model case studies based on the observational field
programme, and the use of these to advance our fundamental understanding
of the west African monsoon dynamics. Particular focus will be given to
the land-atmosphere interactions in synoptic weather systems (notably
African Easterly Waves), and to the role of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in
the monsoon dynamics. The model case studies will also be part of
collaborative work on land-atmosphere dynamics (with the Met Office, CEH
Wallingford and UEA), atmospheric chemistry and transport (in
collaboration with the University of Cambridge and UEA), and in the
understanding of the local-scale climatic patterns important for malaria
and agricultural prediction (with the Universities of Liverpool and
Reading).

This is a 3 year research fellowship funded by NERC and to be held at the
Institute for Atmospheric Science, in the School of Earth and Environment
at the University of Leeds. The work will involve collaboration with
partners in the UK, Europe, Africa and the USA. The project manager at the
School of the Environment will be Dr Doug Parker.

Applicants should have, or expect shortly to obtain a PhD in a physical or
mathematical science, but experience in meteorology and atmospheric
modelling would be a particular advantage.

The University is introducing a new reward framework which will facilitate
the recruitment, retention and motivation of world class staff.
