Atmospheric circulation regimes and regional extreme events

A one-year postdoctoral position is available, starting immediately, for atmospheric circulation and climate analysis for northeastern North America. The project will focus on two aspects: The first involves a regional climate analysis of atmospheric circulation and its relation to extreme events. The second aspect includes an analysis of regional pressure gradients, severe storms and extreme local winds in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region. The position will be based at McGill University and the Ouranos consortium on regional climate and impacts (www.ouranos.ca), both located in Montreal Canada. The project will be supervised jointly by Profs. Charles Lin and John Gyakum of McGill University.

The position requires a PhD in Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field, with a strong background in quantitative data analysis. The salary will be $40,000 per year. Initial appointment will be for one year, and is renewable subject to the availability of funds and satisfactory progress.

Please send a Curriculum Vitae and a statement of research interest to the following address. In addition, please arrange to have 3 letters of reference sent to the same address.

Postdoctoral Position

Data assimilation

A three-year postdoctoral position is available immediately as part of the Improving Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts Network funded by the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences. This position, based mostly at Meterological Service of Canada at Dorval and at McGill University, involves research in mesoscale data assimilation. A 3D Variational data assimilation system will primarily be used in conjunction with adjoint of moist-physical processes (e.g. Kain-Fritsch convective parameterization scheme) with a view toward assimilating surface precipitation-rate estimates from satellite and radar instruments. Analyses from this system will also feed a high resolution mesoscale model for QPF studies.

Position requires a PhD degree in Atmospheric Science or related fields with a strong background in numerical modeling and preferably some background in advanced data assimilation theory. The salary will be $40,000 per year. Initial appointment for one year, renewable for 2 additional years subject to satisfactory progress. Please send a CV, statement of research interest, and three letters of reference (preferably by e-mail) to Dr. Luc Fillion, Direction de la Recherche en Météorologie, Service Météorologique du Canada, 2121 Route Transcanadienne, Dorval, Quebec, H9P 1J3.

Postdoctoral position

High-latitude weather systems

A two-year postdoctoral position is available immediately as part of Phase 2 of the Mackenzie GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) study (MAGS2), a research network grant sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. This position, based at McGill University in Montreal Canada, supports the project, entitled "Precipitation and weather disturbance evolution in the Mackenzie River Basin: Its interaction with the global circulation."

The position requires a PhD or ScD in Meteorology or related fields with a strong background in one or more of the following areas: Synoptic-dynamic meteorology, diagnostic analyses of precipitating weather systems, and mesoscale analysis and modeling. The salary will be $36,000 per year. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable for an additional year subject to satisfactory progress. Please send a Curriculum Vitae, statement of research interest, and three letters of reference to:

Postdoctoral Position

Extratropical Transition Research

A three-year postdoctoral position is available immediately as part of a research project designed to improve our understanding of surface fluxes and their role in the dynamics of the extratropical transition of Atlantic Hurricanes. The position, based at McGill University in Montreal Canada, is funded by the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences.

The position requires a PhD in Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field, with a strong background in observations and modeling of one or more of the following: Surface fluxes; tropical and/or extratropical cyclones; moist convection. The salary will be $40,000 per year. Initial appointment will be for one year, renewable for two additional years subject to satisfactory progress.
