An open Ph.D. position is available at the Institute of Applied Physics
(IAP), University of Bern, Switzerland

in the field of water vapor in the middle
atmosphere

The microwave department of the IAP is leading in the field of remote
sensing of ozone and water vapor in the middle atmosphere. Microwave
radiometers are operated from the ground in the frame of the Network
for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) and from aircraft.
These instruments provide us with altitude profiles of the species of
interest, particularly ozone and water vapour. With our instruments we
are involved in several international projects. More about our
activities can be found on the web at
http://www.iapmw.unibe.ch

The distribution of water vapor in the middle atmosphere is puzzling
and still not fully understood. Particularly long-term trends in
stratospheric water vapor and their implications e.g. for ozone are not
clear. For this fascinating field of research we are seeking a Ph.D.
student who will be involved in the analysis and interpretation of
water vapor data sets from the stratosphere and mesosphere obtained at
Bern, in the frame of aircraft-campaigns from the tropics to the arctic
as well as from Seoul in Korea in the future, in conjunction with data
from balloons and satellites.

The candidate can also be involved in the operation of our instruments
and in future measurement campaigns.

The candidate should have a strong interest in atmospheric processes,
atmospheric physics and chemistry and preferably some background in
numerical modeling. Candidates should have a Master or Diploma degree
in physics, environmental or earth sciences or equivalent.

Applicants send a cover letter, their CV and copies of diplomas by
email including the names and emails of two references to
