Stratospheric tropospheric exchange in the tropics and mid-latitudes

We invite applications for a PhD position dealing with transport
processes at the tropopause, that is at the interface between the
stratosphere and the troposphere. Numerical simulations will be
conducted with a chemical transport model (the Chemical Lagrangian
Model of the Stratosphere, CLaMS)
http://www.fz-juelich.de/icg/icg-i/clams_e/ developed over the last
several years at ICG-I. An important aspect of this work will be the
interpretation of observations obtained in the tropopause region in
recent field campaigns (and in those coming up in the near future). A
focus will be the transport of air masses from the troposphere to the
stratosphere in the tropics.

The Research Centre Juelich is a multidisciplinary centre with more
than 4200 employees working on a broad spectrum of research
topics. The multidisciplinary orientation of the centre represents an
opportunity: Pressing problems, such as long-term environmentally
compatible energy supply or environmental protection, can be dealt
beyond individual disciplines and have become the basis for work at
the centre. The Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere
(ICG-I) investigates chemistry and dynamics as well as their coupling
in the middle and upper atmosphere. A theory group has been
established at ICG-I that operates numerical models for simulating
stratospheric processes.

The candidate should ideally have a scientific background in
atmospheric physics or chemistry and/or numerical simulation
techniques. An academic qualification equivalent to a German Diplom or
a Master's degree in the field of physics, chemistry, meteorology,
mathematics, or a related discipline is required. Fluent English
(written and spoken) and experience in programming, preferably under
Linux, is desired.

The position is offered for three years, with payment according to a
civil service position (BAT IIa/2, about 18.000 Euros/year
gross). Women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal
personal aptitudes and qualification disabled persons will be given
priority. The starting date is as soon as possible.

Please submit your application, preferably in electronic form (pdf), to
