Workshop On Data Assimilation in Atmospheric & Oceanic Modelling
Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore 560 012 (Sponsored by Indian Space Research Organization)
2-6 January 2006
Scope
Assimilation of data for modelling and forecasting of atmosphere and ocean states is a major
problem today. With increased availability of satellite data in almost near real-time, it is
necessary to look at sophisticated methods of data assimilation.
About the Workshop: It is intended to be a rigorous course in data assimilation.
Beginning with the basics, the course will take the participant on a journey through this
subject and end with application to different problems of data assimilation including but not
limited to assimilation of satellite data in atmospheres and oceans.
Content: This workshop will essentially consist of lectures by Prof Lakshmivarahan,
George Lynn Cross Research Professor at School of Computer Science, University of
Oklohama, Norman USA. Prof Lakshmivarahan did his BE (1967), ME (1969) and Phd
from IISc (1973). He is a fellow of ACM and IEEE and has many honours and awards to his
credit. He is also the co-author of the book “Dynamic Data Assimilation” being published
by Cambridge University Press.
How to Apply?
This course is intended both for scientists/academics working in the field of
atmosphere and ocean modelling and for students of meteorlogy and oceanography
interested in knowing about this subject. A few of the participants especially students
will be supported for travel and stay. There is no registration fee. Please send a onepage
bio-data containing your educational and professional background, how this
workshop will benefit you and whether you require financial assistance to attend
this workshop.
