Fixed Term Appointment – 2.4 years (full time equivalent).
£27,940 to £32,960 per annum (pro rata if part time)
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a three-year multi-disciplinary project starting October 2005, examining the role of oceanography and life history in determining the genetic structure of Antarctic fish populations.
You will develop model analyses of the interaction between circulation patterns and fish life histories at a range of scales and develop a high-resolution hydrodynamic model of the South Georgia/ Shag Rocks shelf and slope regions. Working with other members of the team, you will also develop a Lagrangian transport model to analyse the potential for advection and retention of eggs and larvae at local, Scotia sea and circumpolar scales. You will be using the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS).
With a Ph.D in Oceanography, you will have strong shelf circulation modelling and programming skills, and an interest in interdisciplinary oceanographic studies. A high degree of technical knowledge is essential as is a scientific background in developing shelf sea modelling projects. Knowledge of the POLCOMS model would be a distinct advantage. The overall project is for 3 years' duration starting October 2005. The post is offered as a full-time 2.4 year fixed term appointment but may be offered as a part time post dependent on the successful candidate.
