The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University invites applications for a PhD-position in hydrogeochemistry within the project:
Coupled biogeochemical dynamics of nitrogen and sulfur in aquifer systems and implications for groundwater quality threatened by agricultural nitrogen pollution

Nitrate contamination due to agricultural activity represents a worldwide threat to groundwater resources. Denitrification is the major pathway of removal of nitrate from groundwater systems. In this project, an integrated combination of experimental, field and local/regional reactive transport modeling will be used to elucidate the key factors controlling the rate of denitrification and to determine the impact of denitrification coupled to pyrite oxidation on local and regional groundwater quality at two locations in the Netherlands.

This project is funded by the Water Programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and will be carried out within the Department of Earth Sciences - Geochemistry in cooperation with the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience TNO - National Geological Survey (TNO-NITG).
Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an interest in mathematical modeling and a MSc degree in (bio)geochemistry, hydrogeology, environmental sciences or a related field.

We offer:
A full-time PhD position for 4 years, with monthly salary starting at € 1813,- in the first year to € 2394,- in the last year of appointment. We also offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities and are supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 % per year.
