INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TSUNAMI DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND
COASTAL DEVELOPMENT -2005
Organised by Madras Development Society, Chennai
C0-Sponsored by The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India,
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India,
Co-organised by UNIDO-ICAMT, New Delhi
Technical Co-operation from OXFAM, India
December 26th 2004 ……………..a black Sunday in the history of the world.
A severe earthquake that recorded 9 on the Richter scale triggered a “tsunami”, a killer wave that lashed across the coast of 13 nations. The gigantic waves robbed nations of their land, families of their loved ones, and villages and towns of their identity. Heart rending scenes from the tsunami affected areas were brought to the notice of people across the world by extensive media coverage. Help by way of donations, materials and services poured in from different quarters for immediate relief. However, rehabilitation of the millions affected directly or indirectly- physically ,financially, mentally and psychologically-will be an on going process for a long time to come.
It is imperative that adequate measures be taken in India considering the fact that India has an extensive coastline, and was one of the nations very badly affected by the tsunami. A wholesome plan for the development of the people and places in the coastal areas has to be made. We cannot stop natural disasters from occurring, but certainly the impact wreaked by such disasters can be reduced.
Concept of the conference
The international conference on tsunami, disaster management, and coastal development will be held on July 30th to August 1st 2005 at Chennai, India.
The conference wants to create an awareness on disaster management, and to prepare a strategy to develop coastal regions, so as to minimize damage caused by natural disasters, by availing of the latest techniques and know-how on disaster management from countries around the world, and applying it to Asian countries.
