Hi. Take heart. There is no need to be confused or dejected. India is on the verge of becoming a global player in biotechnology (BT). It is said that BT and bioinformatics (i.e., BT+IT) constitute the new sunrise industry in India. BT suddenly got its due place in the sun after the mapping of human genome. Be assured that it is going to be there for a long time to come. In India, one can choose BT as the area of study at graduation/post graduation/research levels. Apart from B.Sc., many universities offer course in BT in its various avatars such as medical biotech, agricultural biotech, veterinary biotech etc., not to mention marine biotech (e.g., Goa University). Many are supported by the DBT and entrance is thru a national exam conducted by the JNU. Some IIT’s also offer B.Tech biotech course, for which entrance is thru a common JEE. Some also offer M.Tech course. Pune university offers an MBA in Biotech; but 60% of the course is managerial! Go for it if you want to join one of the BT companies at managerial level. On the other hand, if you are more into research, Ph.D., teaching etc., go for the conventional BT course in one of the areas mentioned. Or if you are more computer savvy, go for a bioinformatics course.
For very useful detailed information, see a recent article at: http://www.biospectrumindia.com/content/student/10505117.asp (http://www.biospectrumindia.com/content/student/10505117.asp)
But remember to choose a university/college that has experienced faculty and good laboratory. There is no point in doing the course in one of those run-of-the-mill places where the faculty can hardly handle the complex subject. You can see a list of some of the better ones at: http://www.biospectrumindia.com/content/student/listing.asp (http://www.biospectrumindia.com/content/student/listing.asp)
All the best,
