CHEERS V. Chander, Director, NPOL, receives the award from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
They have proved themselves once again. The scientists of Kochi-based NPOL (Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory) have been awarded the rolling Silicon Trophy for 2004 by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, last week. And they are upbeat. Said a beaming Director of the Institute, V. Chander, "We cannot afford to be complacent now that we've proved ourselves again; we have to continue working hard,"

The trophy is given to the best laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for its `contribution to developing systems for defence'. For NPOL, the contribution involves concurrent engineering to Bharat Electronics, which handles the production and manufacturing for NPOL. The NPOL has the distinction of being probably the only DRDO lab in the country, among the 51, to have won both the trophies, the other being the Titanium Ttrophy, awarded for `contribution to science.' The Silicon Trophy was given for the lab's outstanding contribution to development and production of Sonars systems for surface ships, submarines and helicopters of the Indian Navy. The NPOL-Navy relationship, which Mr. Chander says, is the strength of the success in building state-of-art systems, so much so, that the Indian Navy has virtually stopped importing sonars. "They tell us what they want, and we do it," he added. The selection process involves a series of committees that do the preliminary work. The finalisation is by a Committee of Science Secretaries based on the work done by each lab.

NPOL also received the `Scientist of the Year' award, to a senior scientist M. Mathurakani, in recognition of his contributions for development of Naval Systems.
