have you enabled ftp service in the linux machine?
i.e. is the linux machine accessible from other computers?
to enable ftp service in redhat linux:
with root access, run
>> redhat-config-services
at the command prompt.
you will get the services available on your system.
enable "usftpd" by checking it. usftpd answers incoming ftp service requests.
alternatively, you can go to the service through the main menu
Systems Settings -> Server Settings -> Services.
-------------
In Fedora you have to run system-config-services and enable vsftpd

however the 'usftpd' is not there in the services. i tried the redhat-config-services but couldnt find a proper setup there. let me check. thanks

In RH9, there is 'vsftpd' in the 'Services list'.
main menu -> Systems Settings -> Server Settings -> Services
(it will ask for root password)
enable 'vsftpd' and click 'start' icon in the menu bar (top).
Then ftp will be enabled.
If you not find 'vsftpd' in the 'Services list', then you have to install it.
go to,
main menu -> system setting -> Add/Remove applications
(it will ask for root password), then the package management window will
appear. Scroll down and find FTP server, enable it. and click 'update button'.
(it will ask for the RH9 installation disk CD (2 or 3)).
if do not have RH9 installation CD in hand, vsftp is a freeware and
can get from http://vsftpd.beasts.org/.

hello roxy/vinu/all,
please tell me how to set up vsftpd on fedora 2. it is already installed and what i get when i ftp from other machines to this fedora 2 'connection refused' or so. i have a vague idea that it sould be corrected somewhere in vsftpd.conf despite your reply;i mean i suspect that you were incomplete. so if anybody knows how/what to do please help. i am in damn need.
note: i want to connect via ftp tp fedora core2 from others say redhat 8.
a help would be sincerely acknowledged.
thanks
