The National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR), an Autonomous Society under the Department of Ocean Development, Govt. of India, is the nodal agency responsible for planning, co-ordinating and executing the Indian Antarctic Programme. In addition, the Centre has a well-focused scientific mandate of basic and applied research in various disciplines and themes of polar and oceanographic research. Thus, the scientific mandate recognizes the need to understand the relationships of the polar atmospheric and Southern Ocean regions for our understanding of the global environment and the opportunities presented by these realms as unique research platforms. Further, the Centre shall initiate and maintain environmental monitoring programme at Maitri so as to comply with Environmental Protocol and propose to interact with other institutions for its sustainable implementation.
