I feel it is just the wave crest and trough (red and blue).
It also means it took around 2 hours or more for the tsunami
to reach the SriLanka - India coasts.
2 hours to save if we were prepared..

Hi anand & rocksea,
Well, as per news and other media services and also i saw one more animation, combining all these, the Tsunami hit in the indian Coast at around 9:30IST which is almost 3hr from the earthquake time. But the animation shows something like 140minutues or so.
Secondly, Red and Blue shows crests and trough the lengthe between crest and trough will not be so large. I think for animation purpose there are different colors used but actually there is no color bar required.
The link is really nice and also the website. It will bring all the oceanographer to one platform to discuss freely.
Good to see you always.

Probably anand got this animated image from the following link
http://staff.aist.go.jp/kenji.satake/animation.gif
try to see the link. it has more animation than above one.
actually this link was from the web site of "National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)", Japan
They are given details about the color of the animation also
"The red color means that the water surface is higher than normal, while the blue means lower. It indicates that initial tsunami to the east (e.g., Phuket) began with receding wave, while to the west (e.g., Sri Lanka) large wave suddenly reached. The darker the color, the larger the amplitude. The tsunamis were larger in the east and west directions"
for more details go through the following links

sir,
Thanks for your answer. It is amplitude (cm), then a color bar can be generated. I also browsed a past tsunami image in the off washington area.
http://quake.usgs.gov/tsunami/GIFanimation.html
Where a colorbar is shown.
thanks for your kind information and links
