Ph.D position in Arctic Technology at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)
General
The Department of Arctic Technology at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Svalbard, Norway, invites applications for a Ph.D position in Arctic Technology.
UNIS is a state-owned limited company. Representatives from the universities in Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø and Trondheim are represented on the board. UNIS is located in a modern facility in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, well-supplied with field equipment and analytical laboratories. The institution has access to infrastructure for both marine and terrestrial field research on Svalbard, which is a mandatory requirement for research carried out at UNIS. The studies at UNIS are marketed internationally, and all classes are offered in English. In 2004 students from 24 countries were represented at UNIS.
Description of the Vacant Position
The vacant position is part of the Departmentof Arctic Technology. In the Department there are 1 Full Professor, 2 Associate Professors, 3Adjunct Professors and 4 Ph.D. students employed at the Department.
Human activity in Arctic and sub-Arctic marine areas increase, especially the exploitation of oil and gas in areas such as the Barents Sea, the Canadian Arctic, the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk are of importance. The severe environmental conditions in these areas are a challenge both for designing marine structures and for handling possible pollution from such installations.
At the Arctic Technology department we want to strengthen our ongoing research activity within ice mechanics and forces on coastal and offshore structures.
Ice represents a major challenge to marine structures, and often gives the design load on coastal and offshore structures in Arctic areas such as platforms, pipeline, ships, wharfs etc. The estimation of forces on structures is not well defined and there is considerable scatter in the predictions made by the experts. The shortcomings of the present models are basically due to lack of full-scale measurements and lack of precise characterization of the ice. We welcome applications with focus on measurements and simulations of thermo-mechanical properties of first-year sea ice related to estimation of ice forces on structures.
Employment Conditions for Faculty Positions at UNIS
The employment contract is of 3 years.
We offer furnished, reasonably priced housing.
The successful applicant will be based at UNIS in Longyearbyen and is expected to contribute actively in ongoing scientific activities at the department.and also be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.
