Open PhD position
"Lake sediments and Little Ice Age Type Events in the South-Central
Andes of Chile"

A three years PhD position is open for an enthusiastic young researcher
to work in a small interdisciplinary team at the Department of
Geography, University of Bern, Switzerland. The project deals with the
reconstruction of subdecadal-scale environmental and climatic changes
for the last 1000 years based on sediments of small glacial lakes in the
Andes of Central Chile. The paleo-limnological data will be compared
with information from natural archives (ice cores, tree rings)
documentary data and data from ensemble GCM runs. For further project

The ideal candidate has a background in physical geography, geology,
paleoecology, environmental physics or chemistry, or climate system
science and is experienced in analytical laboratory work (sedimentology,
geochemistry) and multivariate statistics.

The successful candidate will participate in the NCCR Climate (Swiss
Center of Excellence in Climate Research) educational program and
network of about 30 PhD researchers from different disciplines

Salary: Swiss NSF PhD Fellowship (33,000 to 39,000 CHF, 100%)

The position is available from 1 July 2005. Review of applicants will
start on 30 April 2005 and continue until the position is filled.
