PhD student position in atmospheric science at Empa, Institute of Materials Science and Technology, Switzerland

Empa is a Swiss Science and Technology Institution of the ETH-Domain. The Air Quality and Environmental Technology Laboratory offers a PhD position in atmospheric science. The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists from Paul Scherrer Institute and ETH Zurich.

Atmospheric aerosols have negative effects on human health, ecosystems and global climate. A significant fraction of atmospheric aerosols consists of organic substances. Currently, there is a limited understanding of the chemical composition and processes that control the formation and transformation of organic aerosols in the atmosphere.

The project is focused on the atmospheric transformation of organic compounds emitted by internal combustion engines. An Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) is used to provide quantitative information on the chemical composition of the organic aerosol with a high size and time resolution. AMS data will be collected at different measurement sites of the Swiss National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL), as well as at the exhaust pipe of motor vehicles. This data will be combined with comprehensive data from other projects (VOCs, OVOCs, gaseous air pollutants and other aerosol properties) to investigate and model the transformation of organics from the source to the receptor site. The receptor model approach will be extended to reactive species and used to quantify the contribution of road traffic to organic aerosols.

We are looking for a highly motivated physicist, chemist or environmental scientist with a sound background and interest in mathematics. Experience in
atmospheric sciences
statistical data analysis
measurement of trace gases and/or aerosols
is an advantage.
