15th National Summer School on Geophysical and Environmental Fluid Dynamics

Natural Environment Research Council and University of Cambridge, UK
Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Sunday 11th to Saturday 24th September 2005 (Deadline for applications
30th April 2005)

================================================== =========================

This intensive Summer School aims to introduce participants to fluid
dynamics as applied to geophysical and environmental flows. It is
intended primarily for students pursuing research towards a PhD and
is also suitable for those in industry and government interested in
improving their background in the fluid mechanical aspects of
environmental problems. Students are accepted from a variety of
scientific backgrounds, though knowledge equivalent to a first degree
involving mathematics, physics or mechanics is an advantage.

CORE LECTURES:

Large-scale Atmosphere-Ocean Dyanmics by Peter Haynes

Geological Fluid Mechanics by Herbert Huppert

Ocean Circulation by David Marshall

Fluid-Dynamical Fundamentals by Michael McIntyre

Buoyancy-Driven Flows by Grae Worster

Weather and Climate by Emily Shuckburgh

2005 INVITED LECTURERS:

* Prof Stephen Belcher, University of Reading, on 'Atmospheric
Boundary Layer and the Urban Environment'
* Dr Eddie Bernard, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, on
'Tsunamis'
* Dr Karen Heywood, University of East Anglia, on 'Southern Ocean
Dynamics'
* Prof John Wettlaufer, Yale University, on 'Ice in the
Environment'

The Summer School will be held in Cambridge at the Department of
Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the Centre for
Mathematical Sciences. In addition to attending lectures,
participants will carry out programmes of laboratory experiments and
hands-on computer demonstrations.

Financial support is available for NERC students and staff, and a
limited number of places are available at reduced tuition fees for
other students.
