We are seeking a student for PhD or Master's level graduate research in the area of Marine Biogeochemistry. The student will work on aspects of the global organic carbon cycle with emphasis on the Southern Ocean, north of Antarctica. The polar oceans are the only places on earth where surface waters, rich in algal-derived organic matter, flow down to the bottom of the deep ocean. This process may sequester carbon from the atmosphere and influence CO2 concentration and climate. The flux of organic matter in the ice-covered Weddell Sea will be traced via molecular analyses. The study will be performed in close collaboration with the High Magnetic Field Laboratory, a leading facility for analytical chemistry, colleagues from Physical Oceanography and European research institutes.

Research will include molecular analyses with HPLC and MS techniques. The candidate should have a broad interest in marine biogeochemistry, be motivated to work in an international and multidisciplinary team, and be disposed to participate on research cruises. Training and experience in analytical chemistry, preferentially chromatography, is required.

Tallahassee is an affordable University community in Florida's Panhandle located about 45 min. north of the Gulf of Mexico. Florida State University is a comprehensive, graduate-research university with a liberal arts base. In 2003, enrollment at the main campus in Tallahassee was 33582. The department of oceanography has 27 faculty members and is located on the main FSU campus.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Thorsten Dittmar preferentially via email dittmar@ocean.fsu.edu or at Florida State University, Dept. of Oceanography, OSB 311, Tallahassee, FL 32306-4320, USA.
