Job Announcement: Programmer/Atmospheric Scientist
The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), located in Asheville*, North
Carolina, is seeking an individual with education and experience in an
atmospheric sciences/climate discipline and a strong background in
programming to fill a position in its Climate Monitoring Branch (CMB)
under a contract through STG Incorporated. The successful applicant
will be an employee of STG working with NCDC climatologists. NCDC, a
part of NOAA and the Department of Commerce (DOC) produces numerous
climate publications, responds to requests for climate information, and
provides historical perspectives on climate which are vital to the
nation's economy, the study of climate variability and change, and other
environmental issues.
NCDC's Climate Monitoring Branch monitors national, regional and global
climate in near real-time and performs short-term climatological
analyses tailored to specific monitoring requirements pertinent to the
design, planning, development, and execution of climate-related
activities. The CMB maintains liaisons with national and international
organizations and prepares climate monitoring analyses related to a
broad range of climate-sensitive activities.
Applicants should be proficient in languages to include FORTRAN, Perl
and HTML in a Unix/Linux environment and preferably have either a B.S.
or M.S. degree in an atmospheric sciences/climate discipline including a
background in statistics. The successful candidate will provide
programming support to a wide variety of climate monitoring activities
that involve the use of large datasets of in-situ and remotely sensed
climate and weather data. Projects will include the manipulation of
data on hourly through monthly timescales for data reduction,
statistical analysis, and graphical display. Additional information on
