Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) has an
opening for two Ph.D. Fellowships for international students in
the Department of Marine Geosciences to study:

1. Fine-scale structure of the Lucky-Strike hydrothermal system and
volcano at Mid-Atlantic Ridge from joint analyses of seismic reflection,
refraction, seafloor compliance and electromagnetic data. The data for
this project will be acquired during a 34-day marine cruise in May 2005
aboard N/O L’Atlante. The project is funded by the European Union
Marie Curie network, MomarNet (http://www.momarnet.org (http://www.momarnet.org/)). Non-
French students with an interest in marine geophysics are encouraged
to apply. We would like the student to participate in the May cruise, and
he/she may spend some time at the Southampton Oceanographic
Centre, UK.

2. Quantification of fluids from full waveform inversion of multi-component
vertical seismic profile data: This studenship is funded by the LITHOS
group (http://lithos.esc.cam.ac.uk (http://lithos.esc.cam.ac.uk/)), which is a joint project between IPG
Paris and the University of Cambridge and financed by a consortium of
oil and service companies. The data for this project will be provided by
British Petroleum. Students with a strong background in mathematics
and physics or an interest in quantitative seismology are encoured to
apply. The student may spend some time at BP in Houston or/and at
the University of Cambridge, UK.

The student will be registered at the Doctoral School of IPG Paris
(http://ipgp.jussieu.fr (http://ipgp.jussieu.fr/)). IPG Paris is one of the leading earth science
institutions in the world and provides a very broad training in earth sciences.
