The Earth System Physics Section of the Abdus Salam International Centre
for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) invites applications to the
following positions :
1) One research scientist position (P3 of UN scale) in coupled
ocean-atmosphere modelling (see the official vacancy announcement at:
http://www.ictp.it/pages/info/opportunities.html)
Applications for this positions should be addressed to:
Personnel Office, Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical
Physics
Strada Costiera 11, I-34014, Trieste, Italy
Fax : +39-040-2240-593 e-mail: personnel_office@ictp.it
not later than 31 March 2005.
2) Four post-doctoral/visiting scientist positions in the Physics of
Weather and Climate Group:
2a) Two post-doctoral positions in the areas of: atmospheric modeling,
preferably at the regional and meso-scale, atmospheric chemistry and
aerosol modeling, climate-air quality interactions, biosphere-atmosphere
interactions, hydrologic cycle.
The post-doctoral fellows are expected to work with, and contribute to
develop, the modeling tools and datasets available in the PWC group,
in particular the regional climate modeling system RegCM. The fellows
are also
expected to contribute to the educational activites of the PWC group and
to interact with the visitors of the group within the mission of the
Abdus
Salam ICTP.
2b) Post-Doctoral fellow in: Modelling and diagnosis of inter-decadal to
inter-centennial variability of the climate system
The selected candidate is expected to contribute to the current research
programme on natural climate variability and predictability, using a
simplified atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) either forced by
historical prescribed sea surface temperatures, or coupled to a
hierarchy
of ocean models (from a thermodynamic slab model to a multilevel
dynamical
model). Previous experience in one of the following research areas will
be
especially valued:
- Interannual and interdecadal climate variability in tropical regions
- Land surface and/or sea-ice modelling
- Physical parametrizations in intermediate-complexity GCMs
2c) Post-Doctoral fellow/Visiting scientist in: Climate predictability
on
seasonal to interannual time-scale
The selected candidate is expected to perform diagnostic studies on
short-term climate predictability using the output of ensemble climate
simulations, with main focus on tropical regions. He/she is also
expected
to contribute to the training of scientists from developing countries on
the diagnosis and validation of experimental seasonal predictions, using
databases originated from various modelling centres. Previous experience
in seasonal predictability studies and tropical climate variability is
required for this position, and familiarity with interactive diagnostic
packages for the analysis of gridded data-sets is appreciated.
Applications for these positions should be addressed to:
