KOCHI: It started off as a unique platform for oceanographic discussions a couple of years ago. But today this first oceano website with forum facility for effective communication between members, www.oceanographers.net (http://www.oceanographers.net) has caught the attention of Russian oceanographers who now maintain a translated version of the same site."When a Russian oceanographer Nikolay Kuldonov approached us, we didn’t know what to do.None of us knew Russian. So we asked him to be a moderator," says Anand, one of the founder-moderators of the site.

`"The website was launched on January 1, 2005 with the intention of having a forum," says Anand who is a oceanographic scientist in Kerala.

Anand along with a couple of friends Vinu K V and Roxy Mathew were studying MSc at Cochin University when the idea of the website started. More people joined in and now they have more the 1,623 members and more than 3,000 posts.

Nikolay who moderates at www.oceanographers.RuNet (http://www.oceanographers.RuNet), works at the International Max Plank research school in Earth System in Hamburg, Germany.

While Vinu is doing his post-doctoral at the National Institute of Environment Studies in Japan, Roxy Mathew is at the Euro Mediterranean centre for climate change in Italy.

The site discusses research work related to the oceans, news, workshops, opportunities etc with Aboobacker from NIO, Goa and Praveen from Canada among the others involved
