New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) The Andaman and Nicobar islands, Pondicherry and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa today experienced tremors of a major earthquake having origin off the west coast of Sumatra, the Indian Meteorological Department today said.

According to preliminary Met reports, the quake measured 8.0 on the Richter scale and had an epicentre at 3.7 degrees North and 95.0 degrees East and accurred around 0630 hrs.

Reports from Port Blair said jetties on Neil island and Havelock island and the Hati Tapu jetty in the Andamans were badly damaged in the tidal waves and some boats moored there were submerged.

Some cars were washed away near a religious place in 'Mazar Pahad' area. Island authorites are readying the Rabindra Bangla Vidyalaya in Port Blair to accomodate families that may have been affected by the quake which is of a devastating intensity.

Tremors of the quake were also felt in Chennai, Pondicherry and north coastal districts of Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and several parts of coastal orissa and its capital Bhubaneswar.

A report from Chennai said huge tidal waves in the Bay of Bengal, three hours after the first tremors were felt in the city at around 0645, lashed houses close by the shores.
