Hello all,
I remember, QSCAT wind stress (not wind speed) was able to
download from
podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/ocean_wind/quikscat/stress/L3/data/2005/QS_STGRD3_2005167.05Jun180203.Z
location.
But it is not existing there anymore. What is happening? Any idea?

Hi all,
I had figured out where you can get Qscat wind stress, but only half the
resoltuion as the original data (i.e. 0.5 degree) from
ftp://ftp.ifremer.fr/ifremer/cersat/products/gridded/mwf-quikscat/data/daily
But dont know what happened to that one in JPL/NASA page.

The data set of wind stress on JPL NASA was removed in 2007 because the formula (Large & Pond) they adapted in calculating it was wrongly used.
You may however have to calculate yours individually...or find wind stress data from ERS-1and -2 in poet.jpl.nasa.gov, which ofcourse existed not after 2002.
Other valuable dataset can also be found there such as SST, current and SSH.
You may use the 'air-sea toolbox' to calculate your wind stresses. This, and other valuable toolboxes in matlab are found at
http://www.mathtools.net/MATLAB/Earth_Sciences_and_Mapping/index.html

Hi Ibrahim,
Thank you for the information. I didnt know this before.
Do you have any idea what formula they used in the
windstress data given in Ifremer website (the above post)?
If you know more details, please update the status.

Hi Vinu,
Ifremer used tau = ro x Cd x W^2, where
tau = windstress
ro = density of surface air equal to 1.225 kg/m^3.
Cd = drag coefficient (following Smith (1988))
W = scatterometer wind speed
Smith S. D., 1988 : Coefficients for sea surface wind stress, heat flux and wind profiles as a function of wind speed and temperature. J. Geophys. Res., 93, 15467-15472.
Best regard,
José

Hi Vinu,
You may find the documentation of ifremer's quikscat data in this link in addition to Jose's info.
