Numerical coupling between Eco3M and MARS-3D
Application to the Gulf of Lion
Post-doctoral subject:
1- Construction of a coupling interface between the numerical codes MARS-3D (for
hydrodynamics) and Eco3M (for biogeochemistry). The coupling will be as less intrusive as
possible, not only to allow separate evolutions of the two codes, but to integrate other
utilization modes (e.g. 0D modelling).
2- Implementation of this coupling for the Golfe du Lion.
3- Simulation of an annual cycle to compare model outputs with measurements and already
existing simulations from previous models.
Description
Part 1 Determination of the coupling strategy
Different technical solutions for the coupling of the two models will be investigated. Several
hydrodynamical models that can be potentially coupled with Eco3M will be analyzed in order to
identify their strategies in terms of numerical solving, variable allocations, parallelization... In that
way, the coupling interface will be conceived so as to be potentially easily adapted to any of these
hydrodynamical models. A particular attention will be given to the differential diffusion of different
constituents of a given organism and to the associated constraints in solving the transport equation.
Partie 2 Coupled modelling of the Golfe du Lion
In a second step, Eco3M will be coupled to the MARS-3D hydrodynamical configuration of the Golfe
du Lion (1km resolution). An annual cycle representing the dynamics of the lower trophic levels of the
marine ecosystem will be simulated and compared to data (phytoplankton successions, primary
production (new and exported) budgets,...) and with already existing simulations.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree, or equivalent, in fluid mechanics, oceanography, atmospheric
sciences or a similar field; demonstrate motivation for research; have experience in scientific
modelling (hydrodynamical modelling or coupled physical-biogeochemical modelling), preferably
with the fortran langage.
Duration: 1 year. The post-doc can start as soon as possible or in the beginning of 2008.
Location: Laboratoire d'Océanographie et de Biogéochimie, Marseille, France.
Appointment: 2 500 / month.
