PhD Studentship in Ecological Modelling

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

The studentship will run for three years and will start as soon as the student is available. The studentship would provide support at standard NERC rates (currently £12,000 p.a.) and UK/EU tuition fees.

Linked to a project focusing on the functioning of the oligotrophic oceanic gyres, there is a vacancy for a PhD student to work on the development and application of ecological models for these regions.

The oligotrophic gyres are the world’s largest ecosystems. They cover 60% of the Earth’s surface and profoundly affect global biogeochemistry and climate. The project will investigate the impact of phytoplankton mixotrophy on the functioning of these ecosystems. Specifically, the student will investigate the consequences of the following hypotheses for ecosystem stability and export production: (i) mixotrophic protists rather than heterotrophic protists dominate bacterial phagotrophy in oligotrophic waters; (ii) mixotrophic protists rather than phototrophic protists or cyanobacteria dominate primary production in oligotrophic waters; (iii) protist phagotrophy rather than bacterioplankton senescence control nutrient recycling in oligotrophic waters.
