The role of mixotrophic protists in oligotrophic ecosystems of oceanic gyres

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description of the research project: The central aim of the project is to
provide fundamental information on the functioning of the oligotrophic oceanic
gyres – the largest ecosystems, which cover 60% of the Earth’s surface and
profoundly affect global biogeochemistry and climate. A concept of what
constitutes the simplest ecosystem will be experimentally tested: that
mixotrophic protists control through predation the dominant bacterioplankton
populations (Prochlorococcus cyanobacteria and the SAR11 clade) which in turn
compete for depleted nutrients. The following hypotheses will be addressed (i)
mixotrophic protists rather than heterotrophic protists dominate bacterial
phagotrophy in oligotrophic waters; (ii) mixotrophic protists rather than
phototrophic protists or cyanobacteria dominate primary production in
oligotrophic waters; (iii) protist phagotrophy rather than bacterioplankton
senescence control nutrient recycling in oligotrophic waters.

The above hypotheses will be tested by using current methodologies and by
further developing them. These methodologies use nutrient bioassays combined
with flow cytometric sorting of isotopically labelled microbes for
quantification of tracer uptake rates and molecular identification of sorted
cells. The work will combine laboratory experimentation with field research on
transatlantic cruises.

Requirements and training: We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist (PDRA
position) with experience and interest in microbial biogeochemistry,
microbiology, molecular biology and tracer chemistry, willing to participate in
several research cruises.

The multidisciplinary team of investigators, carrying out world-class science,
will provide in-depth training and supervision for the successful candidates in
all the specific and unique techniques required for the project and will
encourage further method development. The three year postdoctoral position at
the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton is supported by funding from
Natural Environment Research Council, UK.

If you are interested in this post, please contact one of the investigators:
Dr Mike Zubkov: (mvz@noc.soton.ac.uk), Dr Adrian Martin (apm1@noc.soton.ac.uk),
Professor David Scanlan (D.J. Scanlan@warwick.ac.uk) or Professor Peter Burkill
(phb@sahfos.ac.uk).

The appointment is offered on a Fixed Term Contract basis for three years,
commencing December 2007. The salary will be in the range of £25,134 to £30,913
per annum per annum.
