We’d like to alert the community to a Special Session at the upcoming 2008
Ocean Sciences Meeting in Orlando, Florida (2-7 March 2008). The topic will
be photobiogeochemistry (yes, we coined a new term) and convened by Greg
Cutter and Richard Zepp; the session description is given below. Besides
the scientific justification for this session, the additional reason for
the photochemical community to gather is to honor Oliver (Ollie) Zafiriou
on his recent retirement from WHOI and for his considerable contributions
to the field. There will be a Toast to Ollie party during the OS Meeting to
which all presenters will be invited (details will be distributed in Feb.
2008). Please consider submitting an abstract to this session and keeping
Ollie on his toes.

Photobiogeochemistry: Shedding Light on Biogeochemical Cycles from Rivers
to the Sea

Co-convenors:
Gregory A. Cutter, Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences,

Richard Zepp, US EPA, Athens, Georgia 30605-2700 USA;

Aquatic photochemistry is a relatively young field, but has taken on
increased significance due to its roles in the cycling of
radiatively-important and greenhouse gases, and effects on the degradation
and bioavailability of organic and inorganic compounds. It is also tightly
linked to photobiology and thus it is a crucial component to many
biogeochemical cycles; “photobiogeochemistry” could be an appropriate and
all-encompassing term. This session will feature papers that explore the
frontiers of aquatic photobiogeochemistry from fresh to ocean waters,
including field and laboratory-based studies.
