The GKSS Research Centre is located in Geesthacht
near Hamburg, Germany, with a further centre in
Teltow near Berlin, and is a member of the Helmholtz
Association of German Research Centres. With its
approximately 700 employees it undertakes, in collaboration
with universities and industry, research and
development in the areas of coastal research, materials
research, regenerative medicine, and structure research
with neutrons and synchrotron radiation.

The Institute for Coastal Research at the GKSS-Research
Centre Geesthacht invites applications for a 3-year

Post-doctorial fellowship-Position
Code-No. K 9
in the field of coastal geo-sciences.
The institute is concerned with the development of methods
for measuring and monitoring techniques in coastal regions
and the modelling of physical and biological coastal processes.
The successful applicant will conduct research in the field of
underwater-acoustical seabed classification with the aim to
develop mapping tools of submarine benthic habitats. These
will be used as a basis for ecological state assessment protocols
of the German Wadden Sea and North Sea. The tasks
will comprise planning of and participation in field surveys
on board research vessels, application, comparison, and
assessment of existing acoustical classification schemes
based on different principles, development of procedures for
optimal survey, extraction of the information content in the
acoustical backscatter signals in relation to sediment composition
and benthic habitat characteristics (coverage, habitat
type, etc.). Part of the work will be carried out in cooperation
with the Technical University of Delft (Prof. Dick
Simons, EOS Department).
Conditional prerequisites for the candidates are
• PhD in Geo-Sciences or Physics within the last five years
• profound knowledge in underwater acoustics documented
by several publications in internationally high-ranked
scientific journals (at least one as principle author)
• appropriate experience in the analysis of coastal physical
or biological processes
• appropriate programming skills in at least one scientific
program language (FORTRAN, C, Matlab or comparable)
• fluent English in speaking and writing
• physical fitness to participate in field surveys on board
research vessels
We expect creativity and independence, abilities to work
cooperatively and goal-oriented within a team of scientists,
engineers and technicians, participation in several-week field
surveys on board research vessels, active cooperation with
scientists from different disciplines, documentation of the
work via several publications in internationally high-ranked
scientific journals, and the supervision of master and PhD
students.
