The Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University invites applications for a 4-year research position leading to a PhD degree in Environmental Hydraulics.

Job description
________________________________

As part of the NWO Indonesian-Dutch East Kalimantan Research Programme, the Mahakam research cluster aims to establish the impacts of sea-level rise, climate change, upstream controls and human intervention on the sediment and mangrove dynamics of the Mahakam delta. In this context, the PhD candidate will study the sediment and liquid discharge distribution over the main distributaries in the delta, as modulated by the tide. The central aim is to establish general relations between channel morphometric properties such as mean depth and surface width to hydraulic variables, influenced by the tide. To this end, the PhD candidate will spend approximately nine months doing fieldwork in Indonesia, during two or three separate campaigns. Fieldwork will a.o. consist of acoustic Doppler current profiling, measurement of sediment transport, bathymetric surveying and characterization of bed material and riparian vegetation. Part of the research effort will be spent on the conversion of shore-based, horizontal acoustic Doppler current profiles to liquid and suspended sediment discharge estimates, integrated over a river cross-section. The PhD candidate will set up a regional hydraulic model to simulate discharge and sediment transport in the tidal river and delta, which is calibrated with field measurements and satellite remote sensing data. A local model will be nested in the regional model, to investigate discharge distribution at a tidally influenced river bifurcation. The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with a second PhD candidate working on the hydraulic interaction between the River Mahakam and the Mahakam Lakes, which are considered to prevent flood events and low flow conditions in the delta. Both during fieldwork and at the stage of writing of scientific papers, the PhD candidate will cooperate with hydrologists, geologists, biologists, anthropologists and remote sensing scientists in the Mahakam cluster.

The Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group (HWM) chair studies catchment-scale hydrological processes through advanced measurement, modelling and assimilation techniques. Our goals are to develop, test and interpret advanced observation methods for hydrological fluxes and states at a range of spatial and temporal scales; to develop catchment-scale hydrological models for water, sediment and solute transport and to synthesize hydrology at the catchment scale with special attention to hydrological extremes (floods and droughts).
