Workshop on Monsoon Climate Variability and Change, and Their Impacts on Water, Food, and Health in Western India
The Workshop will be hosted by the Nirma University in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India from 5 February to 7 February 2007.
The objectives of the Workshop are:
1. To review the present state of knowledge about monsoon climate variability and change; and natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, and tropical cyclones, associated with them;
2. To review the present state of knowledge about impacts of monsoon climate variability and change on water supply and demand, agriculture, public health, and economy in western India;
3. To solicit expert views on what aspects of year-to-year and longer term monsoon climate variability and change would be useful to society in western India if predicted and how the information provided would be used;
4. To formulate research and education programs on monsoon climate variability and change; and their impacts on water supply and demand, agriculture, public health, and economy in western India; and
5. To identify essential technologies for the research and education programs.
The Workshop will address the following topics.
Session I: Monsoon Climate Variability and Change
Session II: Variability and Change in floods, droughts,
tropical cyclones, and other extreme events
Session III: Monsoon Climate Predictability
Session IV: Why are Societal Impacts of Monsoon Climate Variability and Climate Change Important?
Session V: Impacts on Water Security (floods and droughts, economic impacts of hydrologic extremes, floodplain management)
Session VI: Impacts on Food Security (impacts of hydrologic extremes such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and wind storms on agriculture)
Session VII: Impacts on Health Security (impacts of hydrologic and temperature extremes on vector- and water-borne diseases; economic impacts of such diseases)
Session VIII: Impacts on Coastal Security (impacts of hydrologic, wind, and wave extremes on design of structures, emergency management and insurance, and transportation)
Session IX: Technologies for Monsoon and Impacts Research (automated weather observing stations; automated surface (ocean and land) observing stations; remote sensing from unmanned and manned aerial vehicles, unmanned ocean vehicles, and satellites)
Session X: Climate and Societal Impacts Information Systems
Session X: Discussion, Conclusions, and Recommendations
Ahmedabad is the seventh largest city in India, with a population of more than 5 million people. Located on the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 A.D. and was at the forefront of the Indian independence movement in the first half of the 20th century. A rising center of education, scientific research, information technology, and industries, Ahmedabad is the cultural and commercial heart of Gujarat, and much of western India. Ahmedabad is well-connected by air and rail with Mumbai (Bombay), New Delhi, and other major Indian cities.
Please contact in the address below on or before 15 October if you would like to participate in this Workshop.
